Dr. Galina Bershteyn began her career in animal medicine as a veterinary technician, graduating from Ridgetown College with honours in 1998. Although she grew up with a love of horses, she had few opportunities to pursue that interest until 2000. During that year she worked as a locum veterinary technician in England and had the unique opportunity to work with a James Herriot type of equine practitioner near the Lake District. And the rest is history……as she developed her passion for horses she began to immerse herself in everything horsey. Once returning to Canada she pursued a DVM degree at the Ontario Veterinary College and continued to ride in various disciplines including western pleasure, trail riding and hunter jumper. She worked at the test barn at Fort Erie racetrack and fell in love with a thoroughbred gelding, Sherman, who turned out to be a crash course in veterinary medicine but very cooperative for procedures! While at OVC, she took a special interest in the Teaching Horse herd and developed a socialization and adoption program for the students and horses. She also had the opportunity to be involved in volunteer veterinary work in South East Asia in 2006.
Her special interests include lameness, dentistry and alternative therapies. In her free time she enjoys scuba diving (certified Rescue Diver), hiking, travelling and playing with her Thoroughbred/Hanoverian cross McBride aka Peanut.
